A new approach in searching of biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis

Resumo: Metabolic processes in the organism lead to the formation of diverse species of metabolites, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), therefore, in a pathological condition, such as carcinogenesis, differentiated processes occur in the cells, generating a different set of compounds. Once produced by human metabolism, these compounds are excreted in the biological fluids. A promising approach is to study composition of samples that can be obtained by non-invasive collection. Different analytical techniques have been used for this purpose, most of them are based on chromatographic methods. Gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer can be a suitable method for determination and identification of substances. The main objective of this research line is the investigation of these metabolites as potential cancer biomarkers.
